Wear to Where: Lemlem!

05.18.11

It's only fitting that I received a Lemlem scarf this Mother’s day. Not usually a fashionable guy, my husband enlisted the help of a very fashionable friend of mine in the hopes of finding the perfect gift. Armed with his new found knowledge he set out to Laguna Supply, and was graciously walked through why Lemlem is such a great company.

Founded in 2007 by supermodel, actress and World Health Organization goodwill ambassador Liya Kebede, Lemlem is a stunning handcrafted collection of women's and children's clothing that is made by traditional Ethiopian weavers from Kebede's homeland. Her efforts have helped to sustain the magnificent handiwork of the local people. She has  helped to create a new sense of economic independence among people in Ethiopia.

In the Ethiopian tongue of Amharic, Lemlem literally means 'to flourish or bloom'.  All pieces are handmade from natural cotton and their designs are rooted in tradition, but woven with a modern touch. It aims to add a sense of diversity to the fashion market while fueling prosperity in another part of the world. Liya's clothing line is another voice for African causes as well as a beautiful embodiment of its culture.

While Lemlem supports an economy, her Foundation supports a cause, and both raise awareness for and are dedicated to Mothers and Children.

Herb Alpert

Herb Alpert in OC!

05.17.11

Two legends are returning to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday – Herb Alpert and Lani Hall!

The concert will include many songs from their latest collaborative effort “I Feel You,” which includes several reinterpreted classics – like Van Morrison’s “Moon Dance,” Peggy Lee’s “Fever” and two Beatles’ songs “Here Comes the Sun” and “Blackbird” – and is the duo’s first studio album in nearly 10 years.

Hall met Alpert when she opened for his Tijuana Brass when touring with Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. The two were married in 1973 and have been musically intertwined ever since.

Tickets for their one-night-only OC concert are still available and start at $25.
